Festive Season Road Safety Campaign 2014/2015 Notes a Reduction in Fatalities

Every year since 2007, the MVA Fund and its strategic partners conduct road safety campaigns over 

the festive season with the aim to curb road crashes and minimize the loss of life during the period. This past festive season was no exception.

The just ended period saw 42 MVA Fund staff members deployed country wide, educating road users on the importance of road safety as well as popularizing the Accident Response Number. Preliminary statistics received from the Business Strategy Unit recorded a reduction in fatalities while injuries and the number of crashes increased in comparison to the previous year.

A significant reduction of 16% in fatalities was recorded by the MVA Fund Call Centre, with regrettably 97 people losing lives in road crashes during the campaign period in comparison to the previous year which recorded 115 fatalities.

Most fatalities were recorded in Erongo (18%), Oshikoto (12%), Kavango (11%), Omusati (10%) and Oshana (10%). The number of injured persons increased by 19%, i.e. 1261 vs 1056 in the previous year.
