The MVA Fund reaffirmed its commitment to road safety during its biannual Media Day held on Friday, 13 March 2026, where journalists gathered to engage with the Fund on key programmes and initiatives aimed at reducing road crashes and improving driver behaviour across the country.
Among the highlights shared with the media was the Fund’s defensive driving initiative, a programme designed to equip drivers with practical skills to anticipate risks, make safer decisions on the road, and ultimately prevent accidents.
Speaking at the event, Chief Executive Officer Rosalia Martins-Hausiku announced that 130 drivers have already been trained through the programme, marking a significant step in enhancing road safety awareness among motorists.
Martins-Hausiku noted that the Fund is keen to expand the initiative’s reach and is encouraging organisations to partner with the Fund to make defensive driving training more accessible.
She explained that companies can work with the Fund by sharing the cost of the training, as the programme requires resources such as training vehicles, facilitators, and logistical arrangements for participants.
Encouragingly, the initiative has already started attracting backing from the private sector. Martins-Hausiku mentioned that a vehicle dealer recently responded to a social media call for support, offering to sponsor vehicles used in defensive driving training sessions.
“This kind of partnership demonstrates how road safety is a shared responsibility,” she noted.
As part of the programme, the Fund visits workplaces to hold awareness sessions and driver training, helping organisations promote responsible driving among their staff. Companies are also encouraged to include defensive driving principles in their workplace driving policies and codes of ethics, reinforcing a culture of safety both on and off duty.
The Fund currently accepts requests for defensive driving training from organisations with a minimum of 20 drivers, allowing workplaces to benefit collectively from the initiative while improving road safety practices among their staff.
Through initiatives like these, the MVA Fund continues to emphasise that preventing crashes is just as important as responding to them and that collaboration between institutions, businesses, and the public is essential for building safer roads for all Namibians.
