The MVA Fund has observed with great concern an increase in pedestrian crashes. Pedestrian safety remains a priority for the MVA Fund especially after pedestrian-related crashes, injuries and fatalities recorded the highest numbers from January to 07 May 2025. According to the Fund’s year-to-date (01 January and 07 May) statistics, 66 pedestrians lost their lives in 402 crashes. Furthermore, statistics show that pedestrian-related crashes have increased by 8%, injuries by 32% and fatalities by 29% compared to the same period in 2024. The Khomas and Ohangwena regions recorded the highest pedestrian related fatalities, with 11 deaths each.
Overall, males account for 70% of crashes and fatalities. Gender data also reveal that men are more frequently involved in crashes and lead in fatalities.
The MVA Fund together with other stakeholders continuous to take a holistic approach to road safety encompassing engineering, education, enforcement and engagement. It is therefore our philosophy that all four facets should be addressed to improve pedestrian safety including children’s safety when using the road.
